On the value of management


Absorbing the past to know the present

and inform the future

Purpose – The goal of this newspaper is to consider the value of supervision history as a contributor to the development of the theory and practice of managing and, to the extent that it can be necessary to absorb the past to be able to understand the present and inform the future, consider what happens to the knowledge base if the surviving " contributions” for the knowledge bottom are part and, without a doubt, erroneous.

Design/methodology/approach – The articles that constitute this kind of special concern form the launching-pad for this debate, with the tips presented below combined with past research and commentaries on the issues raised.

Research limitations/implications – Inside the Life of Reason, Santayana said, " Those who simply cannot remember yesteryear are condemned to do it again it”. Managers looking for the " latest thing”, without having to be able to combine it effectively into their knowledge, and the connection with those who are gone, are ruined to replicate not just the past, but as well the errors of the previous. Accordingly, additionally it is critical for supervision scholars to both recognise and benefit from earlier thinking and scientific work to tell their modern day musings and research if they are to provide meaningful frameworks pertaining to practitioners.

Originality/value – Drawing on the styles presented inside the articles of this special issue, the daily news demonstrates the significance of knowing effectively the history of management thought to scholars and practitioners alike.

Days gone by is never completely gone. It can be absorbed in the present and the future. It stays to shape what we are and what we do (Sir William Deane, 1996).


The usual visitors of Management Decision, who also, from time to time, might have sneaked a look inside the " closed section” which has been the Record of Managing History, may well wonder how come Management Decision would commit a whole concern to the theme. After all, Supervision Decision's self-stated remit is usually to offer " thoughtful and provocative ideas into current management practice” – it is just a journal concentrated on the practicalities of supervision and management decision making. can be reminded of Lewin's (1951, p. 169) exhortation that: " There exists nothing so practical like a good theory”. The purpose of this kind of special issue is to recognize and share the ways in which contributions simply by early freelance writers in management have been (or for least could have been) soaked up into current understanding and may inform the near future development of supervision ideas – the issue then, is about great theory and is, therefore , many practical.

There are few standard management texts today which often not start with homage for the late nineteenth and early on twentieth hundred years writers on management and administration – Weber and bureaucracy, Taylor swift and scientific management, Fayol and the time-honored school of management, and so forth. A quick " tiptoe through the tulips” of their (claimed) key ideas, a passing nod to Chester Barnard and Elton Mayonaise, and then it can be on to Maslow, Mintzberg, Drucker, Porter ainsi que al., with nary a backward glance.
